The PLS together with our partners Philam Foundation and Champ Cargosystem Philippines Inc., in coordination with Angat Buhay, successfully finished the Salcedo school project at Eastern Samar. The project included the construction of a 3-classroom building. Over 100 students per year will be able to benefit from these new classrooms. For this construction, we used a steel frame system where the walls are filled with concrete. This concrete fill-in is ten times stronger than the conventional hollow block walls. Additional bottom chord and upgraded anchoring of the frames were provided in order to further strengthen the roofing system which can now withstand strong winds up to 250 km/h.
In addition to the construction of the building, an oral hygiene and sanitation program with stable water supply was implemented. With this program, children are taught propper tooth brushing and hand washing. Studies have shown that one of the leading causes for dropping out of school is tooth decay and poor health conditions, which make students absent from their classes for a long period of time.
